A mountain man in the Eastern Indian state of Bihar, near the border with Nepal, decides to carve out a passage through a mountain using only his hammer and chisel. People in the region are blocked by an impenetrable jungle from travelling to other parts of India. Through sheer will and determination, Manjhi carved out an 84-kilometer long road. It took 22 years of hard work during which he almost lost his mind for this project. The toll it took on Manjhi's health was tremendous but he continued tirelessly until his death at age 66, three years after finally succeeding. The film is based on the true story of Dashrath Manjhi (1934-2007), a poor labourer from Gehlaur village in Gaya district of Bihar, who spent 22 years chiselling away at a hillock near his home, to make a road. He started this project in 1960, when he saw his wife suffer because she had to wait for hours before being taken to hospital. He began by using hammer and chisel on this mountain to carve out rocks. This task was so big that people said that it could not be done. Over the years, Manjhi persevered with his vision and finally created a passage which 13 villages could use to access medical facilities. This is a real story that happened in India. Manjhi's wife died of a fever before he completed his project. He continued working for 22 years, until he died at the age of 66 after being hit by a falling boulder.
